Thomas Smith

Coach Smith is entering his third season as the Bears' head track and field coach.  He will be skippering both the men's and women's indoor and outdoor programs.  T.J. is also an assistant coach for both the men's and women's cross country programs, a position he has held since 2007.

Smith is a 2006 graduate of Stonehill College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  At Stonehill, he was a four-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection in both cross country and track as well as a three-time all-region selection in cross country. Smith currently holds the Chieftains' outdoor track record in the 10,000 meter run (31:04.77).

Presently a history teacher at Middleboro High School, Smith was an assistant coach for both cross country and track at Stonehill following his graduation.  He instructed three All-American athletes during the 2006-2007 academic year.




John De Leo

John De Leo is in his first season on the Bridgewater State men's and women's track and field coach staff.  John is a 1983 graduate of Fitchburg State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications and Media.

While at Fitchburg, John was a member of both the indoor and outdoor track teams competing in the hammer throw, 35lb weight throw, shot put, and discus. He captained both the indoor and outdoor tracks teams during his junior and senior seasons.

John was a three-time MASCAC champion, three-time All New England selection, three-time All-ECAC selection, and three-time NCAA national qualifier.  He was also a 1982 NCAA All-American and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American in the hammer throw. John placed sixth in national competition in 1982.

Coach De Leo presently resides in Dighton, Massachusetts with his wife, Linda, and three children, Nick, Tim and Casey.




Kevin Ryan

Kevin Ryan is a 2008 graduate of Fredonia State University in New York where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Coaching.  Kevin was a member of the track and field team at Fredonia and competed in the pole vault.

Coach Ryan is a native of Livonia, New York where he played three years of varsity soccer and track at Livonia High School.  He was part of three sectional championship soccer teams and won an individual sectional title in the polevault as well as helping his team win the first ever sectional title in school history. Kevin is second all time in school history in the polevault and holds the county record for his age group. 

Coach Ryan has a level one track and field coaching certification with USA Track & Field (USATF) and is working towards his strength and conditioning specialist certification with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is also attending graduate school at Bridgewater State where he plans to earn a Masters degree in Human Performance and Health Fitness.

Kevin is coaching the polevault, high jump, long and triple jumps, and the sprints at Bridgewater State.  He is also a part-time supervisor at UPS and is coaching  boy's soccer at Milton Academy.
