Griffin, Jones Earn NEWLA Weekly Honors

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College sophomore goaltender Meghan Griffin and freshman attack Jenny Jones captured New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Defensive Player and Rookie if the Week respectively for their performances last week for the Bears.

Griffin and Jones both earned their respective NEWLA awards for the the third time this season.

Griffin was stellar in goal for the Bears as she helped lead her squad to the 2008 NEWLA Tournament title. The Billerica, Massachusetts native posted a 6.50 goals against average and turned aside 23 shots in the Bears' wins over Westfield State and Castleton State.

Griffin registered 16 saves in BSC's 22-8 semifinal win over Westfield and seven saves in the Bears' 19-5 championship game victory over Castleton.

In 12 games this season, Griffin has a record of 9-3 with 100 saves, a .481 save percentage and a 9.95 goals against average.  She is second in the NEWLA in save percentage, fourth in goals against average and sixth in saves per game (8.33).

Jones, who hails from Framingham, Massachusetts, tallied seven goals and two assists for a total of nine points during the NEWLA Tournament.

Jones scored three goals in the Bears 22-8 semifinal win over Westfield State and then notched four goals and two assists in BSC's 19-5 championship game win over Castleton State. In the win over Westfield, Jones set the BSC rookie goal scoring mark as she eclipsed Stacie Dufour and Laura Swart's record of 53 goals set in 2000.

Through 18 games, Jones has 59 goals and 10 assists for a total of 69 points.  She leads the NEWLA in total goals scored and is third in goals per game (3.28) as well as seventh in points per game (3.83). 

As a team, the Bears lead all of Division III in scoring offense with 19.61 goals per game.  They are also second in total points (536) and average scoring margin (+10.33 gpg), and tied for 13th in winning percentage (.778). 

The Bears' NEWLA championship was the program's third overall and first since the 2003 season.  Bridgewater competed as an independent women's lacrosse program from 2005 to 2007 before rejoining the NEWLA prior to the start of this season.

BSC is the top seed in the ECAC Division III New England Tournament which gets underway on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears, who are the top seed in the seven-team tournament, will receive a first round bye and will host the semifinals and championship game on Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th.
