Western New England Advances to Championship with 13-7 Win over Roger Williams

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Third seeded Western New England College advanced to the Championship game of the ECAC Division III New England Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The Golden Bears defeated second seeded Roger Williams University, 13-7, in a semifinal match this afternoon at Bridgewater State College.

WNEC improves to 16-5 and will take-on host and top-seed Bridgewater State tomorrow at noon in the championship game. The Bears defeated fourth seeded Keene State College earlier, 18-13, in overtime. Roger Williams ends the 2008 season with an overall record of 14-5.

Western New England took at 5-4 lead at the half as neither team got up by more than two goals in the opening stanza. Roger Williams tied the score on a sophomore attack Casey Beckwith (Franklin, CT) goal just seconds into the second half. After that the Golden Bears took controlled play the rest of the way.

WNEC scored three straight goals and seven of the next eight to take a commanding 11-6 lead with 11:17 left in the game. Western New England held the Hawks to just one goal in a span of 21 minutes in the second half of play.

For the winners, senior midfielder Katie Devine (New Fairfield, CT) paced the Golden Bears with four goals and two assists while freshman attack Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) added four markers.

Freshman Erin Dougherty (Westford, MA) picked up the win in goal for Western New England. Dougherty came off the bench and allowed just one goal while making three saves in just under 25 minutes of playing time.

WNEC held a 35-15 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in both draw controls. The Golden Bears were 3 out of 7 in free position attempts while the Hawks did not have any free position chances.

Sophomore netminder Amanda Mcgee (Columbus, NJ) registered 14 stops between the pipes for Roger Williams. Junior midfielder Jackie Criss (Westwood, MA) led the way for the Hawks with one goal, two assists and three draw controls.
