Becoming a Teacher

 We are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., which specifies that we meet or exceed criteria for the assessment of institutional quality.  In addition, we are accredited nationally by N.C.A.T.E. (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education) and the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, if Physical Education is what you want to teach.

Bridgewater State College is state approved for Massachusetts Educator Licensure, along with eligibility for licensure in 48 other states and jurisdictions through the Interstate Certification Contract, for thirty-nine different programs.  We provide more programs than most every other school in southeastern New England

Early Childhood Education

The mission of the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education is to prepare professional educators for application for provisional certification with advanced standing and standard certification in the fields of elementary education and early childhood education. 

The Bachelor of Science in Education prepares students for successful careers in teaching.  Post baccalaureate programs that allow students to apply for initial licensure in elementary education (1-6) or early childhood education (PreK-2) and master's degree programs furthering the professional development of licensed elementary and early childhood educators.

Our graduate programs prepare experienced educators for positions as consultants and consulting teachers of reading.

 

Physical Education

Physical Education is taught through the Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion & Leisure Studies.  The mission of the Department is to provide quality health and physical education liberal arts majors with a variety of concentrations and minors leading to professional preparation in a variety of fields.

At the undergraduate level the department offers a major in physical education, which leads to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, and a major in Health Education which leads to a Bachelor or Science degree.  Minors in coaching, health promotion, recreation exercise physiology, dance and health resources management are also offered.

Graduate study offered by the department includes a program in the area of health promotion, which leads to a Master of Education in Health Promotion and a program in the area of physical education, which leads to a Master of Science in Physical Education.

Post baccalaureate programs for initial teacher licensure in physical education and health education are available and are described under the department's graduate programs.

 

Secondary Education & Professional Programs

The mission of the Department of Secondary Education & Professional Programs is to prepare and related professionals to teach, lead, and serve in a diverse and evolving global society.

The Bachelor of Science in Education prepares students for successful careers in teaching.  The department offers a minor in secondary education in conjunction with a major in one of the following academic specialties:  biology, chemistry, dance, earth science, English, foreign language (Spanish), history, mathematics, music, physics, theatre, visual arts.

Graduate programs include Educational Leadership, Instructional Technology, and Counseling.

 

Special Education and Communication Disorders

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders offers programs designed to meet the interests and needs of students who are interested in obtaining Massachusetts initial licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8 grade) or (5-12 grade) or as a Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (all levels). This also includes a five-year Dual Licensure program leading to initial licensure in both elementary education and special education and a masters degree (M.Ed.) in Special Education.

The department also offers an undergraduate pre-professional concentration in Communication Disorders for those students who wish to pursue an education in speech-language pathology or audiology. The program provides students with the prerequisite information pertaining to the scope and practice of the profession, normal developmental processes of communication, disorders of communication, and clinical aspects of the profession in accordance with undergraduate curriculum requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
