Koneski Receives Allard/McDonough Sportsmanship Award

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior Brad Koneski was honored by the Collegiate Baseball Umpires Association (CBUA) of New England as the 2009 recipient of the Allard/McDonough Sportsmanship Award. Koneski was presented the award at the CBUA's annual fall meeting dinner held at the Chateau Restaurant in Waltham, Massachusetts on Sunday.
The Allard/McDonough Sportsmanship Award has been presented annually since 1980 and it recognizes a college player or coach who exemplifies the true spirit of sportsmanship, and exhibits a sincere respect for opponents, umpires, and the game of baseball. The award was named in memory of two former distinguished and dedicated members of the CBUA, Whitey Allard and Marty McDonough.
Koneski, who was selected out of five finalists, is the first recipient who is a relative of a member of the CBUA. Brad's father, Steven Koneski, is a longtime umpire and member of the association for over 12 years.
A native of North Dighton, Koneski batted .371 this past season for the Bears with two home runs and 25 runs batted in. He also scored 44 runs, added 11 doubles and was a perfect 32-for-32 in stolen base attempts.
Koneski's 32 steals in 2009 ties him with Ed Grueter for second place in the Bridgewater State baseball record books. Jason Arraiol holds the Bears' single-season mark with 37 thefts in 2003. Koneski is also third all-time at Bridgewater in career stolen bases with 71.
Koneski finished second in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in stolen bases, and ranked third in runs scored, sixth in doubles and eighth in on base percentage.
In 131 games over four seasons at BSC, Koneski batted .307 with four homers, 33 doubles, 125 runs scored and 64 RBI. He set career highs this season in batting average, runs scored, doubles, runs batted in, stolen bases, on base percentage and slugging percentage (.540).
In 2009, Koneski captured All-MASCAC honors for the first time in his career as he was voted to the second team by the conference coaches. He was also chosen to play in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) College All-Star Game held in June at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.
