2008 ECAC Division III New England Baseball All-Star Team
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior outfielder Steve Smith has been named a second team selection on the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Baseball All-Star Team.
This marks Smith's second appearance on the ECAC New England All-Star Team as he was a first team honoree as a freshman in 2005.
Smith batted .414 (60-for-145) this season with six home runs, 40 RBI, 35 runs scored, 17 doubles and two triples. He also walked 20 times and sported a .683 slugging percentage and a .485 on base percentage.
A native of East Taunton, Massachusetts, Smith led the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in batting average, hits, doubles and total bases. He was also second in the conference in slugging percentage and home runs, and third in on base percentage, runs batted in and runs scored.
Smith was also one of the toughest batters to strike out in all of Division III as he fanned just six times in 145 at bats which ranked him 25th in that category among the national leaders.
Smith finished his impressive four-year career at Bridgewater State as the Bears' all-time leader in hits (231), doubles (55), runs batted in (162), extra base hits (78), total bases (347) and at bats (555). His 17 doubles this season also tied the BSC single-season record held by Joe Florio (1992) and Chad Cambra (2003).
As a freshman in 2005, Smith fashioned a 40-game hitting streak that lasted through the first game of the 2006 season. The 40-game hitting streak is an NCAA all-divisions record for longest streak to start a career.
Smith was named to the NEIBA All-New England Team for the third time in his career. He was a first team selection in 2005 as a freshman and a third team selection last season. Smith was also named to the MASCAC All-Conference First Team for the fourth straight season and was chosen as the conference player of the year.
Last Saturday, Smith competed in the 34th Annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) College All-Star Game held at Fenway Park. He was the 24th player in BSC baseball history to participate in the all-star game and the first since catcher Joe Harkins in 2004.
