SAAC Annual Report

2005-2006

Officers:

Chairperson: Dan Blair (Cross Country, Track and Field)

Vice Chairperson: Heather Eldredge (Field Hockey)

Secretary: Kaitlyn Gambino (Softball)

Sub-Committees:

For the second consecutive year, SAAC had the Hot Topic of early registration for student-athletes. After gathering information about other Division III schools that have this system in place, SAAC contacted the NCAA to make sure this was not a violation of the extra benefit rule. We then wrote a proposal and voted to have it submitted to administration for approval. We are currently in the final stages of approval and hope to have the system working by the Spring 2007 registration period. For community service, in a combined effort with Bear Tracks the athletic department put on Kid's Day for area school systems which was a huge success. Individual student-athletes and teams also engaged in other community service efforts. For fundraising, in the fall semester SAAC held its first ever fundraiser raffle for a pair of Patriots tickets. Proceeds of the raffle were used to help defray the costs of Midnight Madness and Kid's Day. The last sub-committee, Regional SAAC attended a conference-wide meeting in the fall semester and reported back to the group. The spring meeting was canceled due to a lack of content for an agenda.

Athletics Open House:

For the fifth consecutive year the BSC Athletics Department hosted an annual open house for potential student-athletes that was held on Sunday November 6th. Coaches and members of each team were represented to share their experiences as BSC athletes.  Once again, the program was a success and we look forward to hosting this event again.

BEAR Tracks:

BEAR Tracks had many major successes throughout the academic year. First off the group's memebrship doubled in size. For the majority of the first semester the group spent most of their time putting together the Midnight Madness program that kicked off the winter sports season. Over 1,000 students attended and the group looks forward to putting the event on again next year. Also in the fall semester BEAR Tracks sponsored a fundraiser for Katrina victims, promoted the Volleyball team's 100th consecutive MASCAC victory, collected money for the purchase of teddy bears for My Brother's Keeper in Brockton, and organized an obstacle course for kids at the Homecoming and Cranberry Bowl football games. For the spring semester, the major event that BEAR Tracks put on was the Kid's Day event that attracted close to 100 area youth to Swenson Field for a variety of athletic events. Also the group brought back its Pen Pal letter program with an area elementary school. They also decided to revamp their mission statement to better serve studentathletes.  Other major events included promoting fan attendance at the Salem State basketball games and a Senior Day for the wrestling team. Members of the group also volunteered at the NCAA YES Clinic as part of the Women's Final Four at Harvard University.

Bear Trails Newsletter:

As a leadership project after returning from the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference, the Bear Trails Newsletter was implemented. The newsletter is printed monthly and features all of the in-season sport highlights, individual male and female athletes of the month, and promotes upcoming events throughout the athletic department.

Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Pledge:

This is a document SAAC members put together in order to remind all athletes competing at Bridgewater State College proper demeanor while competing and practicing. The document will be posted in all locker rooms and the training rooms in both athletic facilities.

Respect Guidelines:

After attending the 2006 NCAA Division III Regional Leadership Conference in January Assistant Athletic Director Sue Crosby-Tangen and student-athletes Catie Furtado, Jesse Fox and Dan Blair created a respect document that was voted on by a resolution and accepted by SAAC that will be implemented in the Fall 2006 semester.  The document contains guidelines for student-athletes to follow both on and off the site of competition. In the fall the attendees of the conference also plan to work further with other organizations on campus to implement a similar set of guidelines.

Bears in Action:

To further community service efforts, in September of 2006 the Athletics Department will hold its inaugural "Bears in Action" day which will be an afternoon of community service mandatory of all student athletes. The community service will take place in the greater Bridgewater area.

Team Concerns:

At the end of each SAAC meeting any concerns a team had were brought up and Mr. Harper dealt with the concerns accordingly. Two major concerns that students continued to address in 2005-2006 were the equipment room and the current construction projects on campus and the future of the outdoor playing facilities.
