BSC SPORTSMANSHIP RATING SYSTEM
Download Rating System (pdf)
Part of the philosophy of the Intramural Program is that good sportsmanship and FUN is vital to the conduct of every contest. In order to encourage proper conduct before, during, and after a scheduled contests, the Office of Campus Recreation has developed a rating system.
The rating system is as follows:
Postseason Playoff Qualifications:
1. "B" Average sportsmanship rating during the regular season in league play.
2. A sufficient win/loss record.
Sportsmanship Ratings
Criteria:
"A" = 4 points - Awarded to a team
1.
Demonstrates good sportsmanship.
2. Maintains
an attitude of complete cooperation.
"B" = 3 points - Awarded to a team
1. If
there are no documented incidents of poor sportsmanship.
2. A team
may have received verbal warnings & could improve in some
areas
(language, attitude toward officials and scorekeepers,
respect for equipment).
"C" = 2 points - Awarded to a team
1.
When unsportsmanlike conduct is clearly present & players/team
have been warned.
2. In
addition, one of the following situations must have been
documented
in order to receive the rating of "C" or
lower.
a. A yellow card in volleyball or soccer.
b. A technical foul in basketball
c. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in flag football or
floor hockey.
"D" = 1 point - Awarded to a team
1.
If a player is ejected for abusive remarks.
2. If a
player other than the captain persists in questioning the
officials.
3. If a
player repeatedly argues with an official.
4. If
spectators who are clearly related to a team, fail to cooperate
with the officials
"E" = 0 points - Awarded to a team
1.
If a player or coach is ejected for striking or shoving an
official, opponent or
spectator.
2. If a
player is so antagonistic to an official that the game cannot be
played with
proper order and control.
3. If a
player disregards warnings of unnecessary roughness.
4. If a team
plays with an ineligeble player.
A team which receives an "E" rating must have their captain meet with the Assistant Director to be eligible to play their next contest.
Teams must obtain a "B" (3.0 average) in the regular season to qualify for the playoffs. If a teams sportsmanship average drops below a "B" during playoff competition they will forfeit the match. If a team receives two "D" ratings during playoff competition, they will be dropped from play, regardless of their sportsmanship rating average. The Office of Campus Recreation reserves the right to drop any team and/or individual from playoff competition for sportsmanship violations regardless of that team's sportsmanship average.
Special Contest Situations:
1. Both teams will receive a No Rating (NR)
if a contest is not rescheduled due to
facility
problems, etc..
2. A team that defaults on the day of the contest will
receive no rating (NR).
3. A team winning a contest by forfeit will receive a
no rating (NR).
4. A team losing a contest by forfeit will receive a
no rating (NR), unless the forfeit is due
to a poor sportsmanship
rating.
5. Both teams will receive a sportsmanship rating if a
game is cancelled before the start of
the second half.
Any player who is ejected, for any reason, will not be eligible to participate in his/her team's next scheduled contest. Based upon the ejected players actions, further disciplinary procedures may be taken. These decisions are final. Any player or team ejected from a contest will be automatically suspended from the following game or longer,depending on the situation, and must meet with the Assistant Director, to discus further actions. The following are considered to be evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct: profanity, unnecessary delay of game, striking, shoving, or threatening an opponent, official or teammate, arguing with officials, derogatory and abusive remarks toward an opponent, official or teammate, and any action with the intent to physically injure an opponent.
Consumption of alcoholic beverages, sunflower seeds, or tobacco of any form by active players, bench players, and spectators is prohibited. Violators are subject to disciplinary action. Intramural participants may be ejected from a game and suspended from further participation. All teams are responsible for their spectators. Any unsportsmanlike conduct from spectators will be penalized against the team they are "supporting."
